First They Came . . .

The quote from Carl Schurz, in Ms. Somers' last post, reminded me of this poem:

First They Came . . .

When the Nazis came for the communists,

I remained silent;

I was not a communist.

When they locked up the social democrats,

I remained silent;

I was not a social democrat.

When they came for the trade unionists,

I did not speak out;

I was not a trade unionist.

When they came for the Jews,

I remained silent;

I was not a Jew.

When they came for me,

there was no one left to speak out.

Pastor Martin Niemöller

What connections can you make between the two texts that deepen our understanding of being agents of social change?

i can make a connection between ms.Somers post and this poem by looking what they are about. They are both about speaking out. My question:what type of impact do the
post by ms.Somers and the poem have on you?

I think the connections between Carl Schurz and the poem, "First They Came" is that the both are about rights! The quote is about the positive things about equal rights and this poem is about the negative things happening to someone about equal rights!!

This poem is very sad.TGhat guy never stood up or spoke out for any one.And when he was in danger no one stood up for him.He should have stod up.This reminds me of all the wars hapenning in all the contries.I feel sorry for the people that are inocent also the children are dying.I think the solution would be for every one to the GOLDEN RULE.It would be perfect and every one will live in peace and harmony.

I think that the poem means that you have to speak up for everybody if they are innocent.It doesn't matter of their differences and the man in the poem was not speaaking up for the people and after that they came for him but nobody could speak up for him because they were all locked up and going to be killed.

the quote means it dosent matter what you are you still a people

When I read this poem I felt like I aws the only one left in this world. My connection is that when I aws little some of my friends were getting bullied but I couldn't help them because i was scared. When the bully started to bully me then there was no one to help me out.

I think that for this poem its something about hitler,the germens,and the jewish and they're talking about that when they were doing world war 2, they wanted to tell hitler not to kill those people and to let them have a voice.<3
